"The Nervous System (Inverted)" is an elaborate, hand-wrought rope machine in wood, steel, and cord by the young British sculptor Conrad Shawcross. The work, which is currently on view at the Sculpture Garden at 590 Madison Avenue, hangs 50 feet above the ground and spans 25 feet in diameter. Once in motion, its constellations of colored spools revolve in orbit and begin to twine their threads.
"As a model of time, it shows how inadequate our own languages and metaphors are to define time." - Conrad Shawcross
